HANNIBAL

By Brian Williams

Page One

Hannibal sitting in a throne like Arnold Schwarzenegger was at the beginning of Conan. This has to be an incredibly atmospheric portrait of a regal, mean, muscular/bearded Negro in armor and furs. There are torches and smoke. There’s an exotic woman at his feet on one side…on the other is a beautiful male lion.

Caption: Once upon an empire…there was an incredible warrior who defeated the world with an invincible army and then carved a kingdom out of rock from which to rule it.

His name was Hannibal.

And his adventures and conquests are many.

His true story has been kept from the civilized world.

Until now.

Page Two and Three (Double Splash)

Hannibal riding triumphantly on a huge battle elephant, it’s snowing and he’s leading an army of black warriors in a bloody rampage through a large rampart. His elephant is outfitted with gold armor, and he is dressed for combat in chain mail, a flowing black cloak and African jewelry. His face is alive and manic with berserker rage. There are other armored warriors around the monstrous elephant who are carrying massive war hammers, curved swords, and large African shields. The people behind the rampart are Roman Legion style soldiers and they look imposing but have a glimmer of terror in their eyes.

Caption: Witness an era of adventure.

Caption: A time of Iron and magic.

Caption: Of Barbarians and kings.

Panel One

Hannibal screams from atop his elephant steed, a shrill war cry in the frigid air.

Hannibal: Show no mercy, Knights of Darkness!!! These men would crush you and erase your legacy from the earth!!! Show them terror!!!

Panel Two

Medium Sized panel…all out brutal, barbaric warfare between The Romanesque warriors called the Legion…and these black warriors who will be called The Ghost Tribe. The Legion is already getting slaughtered by this unexpected breach. Throats are being slashed with precise sword cuts, hammers are connecting with brains, and the war elephant is trampling incredulous soldiers under its awesome weight.

Panel Three

A Legion General who looks like he may be a person of higher rank is surrounded by a group of caped soldiers…his face is pale and etched with wars. His eyes are cunning and his hair spiky and cut in the style of a Roman Centurion. His look is a combination of fear and anger. His name is Gaius Galvanus.

Glavanus: The black dog has arrived. By the Gods…what manner of jungle beast has he brought with him?

Panel Four

Medium Shot of Glavanus commanding several gleaming, shiny Centurion type soldiers to attack with murderous intent.

Glavanus: Punish their lost souls for daring such an act of war or wallow in hell for eternity at the end of a black sword!!!

Panel Five

More elephants with bellicose riders bust through the wall after Hannibal and his swarm of warriors…the snow is falling in huge flakes, and the black warriors and gold swords contrast greatly with the blankets of white. The elephants bellow horridly, men scream and blood flows freely on the white stone floor.

Panel Six

Gaius Galvanus CU…his eyes shimmering with fear.

Galvanus: This chieftain…Hannibal…he must be mad.

Page Five

Panel One

Hannibal atop his battle elephant, pulling a weapon from his belt that resembles a gold plated, flintlock pistol. He aims it like he’s Dirty Harry or Shaft.

Hannibal: A little surprise for the great white conquerors of the world. A gift from the yellow man!!!

Panel Two

CU of the gun as it fires a projectile.

Panel Three

One of the heroic looking Centurions gets shot right in the eye, and falls to his knees. Blood running down his face…his left eye now a ragged, dark, red socket.

Panel Four

Widescreen shot of the Ghost Tribe pouring into the Legion Camp through the felled rampart, and Galvanus and his soldiers running towards their adversaries despite the weird spectacle they are. Please make this extremely violent, on some Braveheart/Gladiator type ish. Show Hannibal riding his elephant…his gun still smoking.

Panel Five

Galvanus grabs one of his soldiers and gives him a stern command.

Galvanus: Some vile, mongrel sorcery! We must fight them with our greatest weapon! Quickly…release the Gryphon! Let their savage minds crumble at the sight of the incomprehensible beast.

Panel Six

The soldier pulls at a strange flute like whistle that is attached to a rope around his neck and blows on it as if he were trying to summon something.

Panel One

A huge masked warrior with a massive war-hammer that happens to be buried in the guts of a Legion Soldier looks up from his carnage. This is a Frazettaesque panel.

Panel Two

The Legion Soldiers pause from their blood soaked struggle and look to the skies.
Panel Three

A large winged shape of a beast in the snowy clouds begins to materialize over the battlefield.

"You know how to win battles, my general, but you don't know how to win wars!"  what one of Hannibal's lieutenants said after Cannae when he refused to march on a fortified Rome without a siege train.

That's a good idea. THIS IS CARTHAGE!!!!

This was something that I just started having fun with. Kind of in the vein of 300. I decided to have fun with the legend of Hannibal and manipulate history to create a picture of him that was way more sensational than reality. History books have always embellished things and changed the story. I took a similar path here.

I'm assuming this is a layout for a graphic novel/comic book. Have you read Pride of Carthage by David Anthony Durham? David is a brother and just recently won the John C. Campbell Award for his fantasy novel, Acacia. It's a historical fiction novel about Hannibal and a very good book. http://www.amazon.com/Pride-Carthage-David-Anthony-Durham/dp/038550...
